Want to skate?

Interested in getting out on the track yourself in team colours or referee stripes?

Freshie training, for aspiring derby players and refs is offered twice a week and is open for new members on the below dates during Autumn. Our Fall for Derby dates for 2018 are:

  • 25th March
  • 8th April
  • 29th April
  • 13th May
  • 20th May

Can't make Fall for Derby? Stay tuned for more dates coming soon!

Some good things to know

  • Freshmeat training is for skaters with no derby experience.  You must however be able to propel yourself around the rink without holding onto the rail before joining
  • Freshmeat training is 7pm-9pm Thursdays and 5pm-7pm Sundays at Sk8house in Carrum Downs.
  • Full membership costs $55 per month for skaters and $40 per month for referees (this gets you two training sessions per week plus all the off-skates fitness and support that you can handle!)
  • Wanna keep it casual? Not a problem, we offer casual session passes too. $50 will get you four pre-paid session passes (valid for 3 months)
  • You also require Skate Victoria insurance which costs $80 for all of 2018 for skaters ($115 if you are at Bouting level) and $20 for Refs.

Sign me up!

Email your interest to freshmeat@southsearollerderby.com. You’ll be sent all the details and then we’ll see you on the track! Use the same email address to ask any questions you have in the meantime – we are fun, friendly and supportive and love answering!

Can I try before I buy?

We’re okay if you’re not sure derby is for you... yet! Or if the price tag of the first session had you a little hesitant to sign up in the past. We invite you to come along and try the first Freshmeat session for only $10! Sign the waiver, enjoy 2 hours of sweaty derby goodness and then make a decision on whether you’d like to join the league (although we’re sure you’ll fall in love with the sport like we have!) We’ll then credit the $10 towards your league fees when you roll on back that second time.

The Fine Print

  • There are a few sets of rather dubious skates you can borrow if you need to
  • You will not be allowed on the rink without a helmet, mouthguard, elbow pads, wrist guards and knee pads. We have some safety equipment you can hire for $1 an item (approx 10 sets so first in safest dressed), but you will need your own mouthguard and we don't hire those: eew!
  • Total cost for the first session if you hire all equipment and sign an insurance waiver is $14 plus you need to supply your own mouthguard. If you choose to join (or know on day one you’re onboard forever) you’ll need to pay insurance and the monthly league fee (or part thereof if we start mid-month) prior to continued training
  • Applications for membership and insurance forms will be available to complete on the day so arrive at least 15 minutes early to fill these out and gear up

Don't want to skate?

Even if you're not keen on being on skates there are other ways to get involved at South Sea Roller Derby. We are always on the lookout for Volunteers, Bench Staff (Benchies) and Non Skating Officials (NSO's) to help out with our bouts and our training.

Volunteers do all the things that help our bouts run smoothly. From manning the merch table to greeting fans at the door, volunteers are highly valued members of the league.

Our Bench Staff are there to keep their team organised and motivated during the games. Bench Managers decide who goes on the track, and Bench Coaches adjust the team's strategy during the bout. If you are one of those people that love sports strategy, have an understanding of gameplay and know exactly what the team needs to do to win - then become a benchie!

NSO's are there trackside to help in the running of the actual game. Roles range from penalty box timing, to scoring and everything in-between. It's the closest you can get to the action without being on wheels!

If being a vollie, benchie or NSO seems right for you please email freshmeat@southsearollerderby.com to express your interest.

See you at the rink!
