Nobody knew it at the time but due to COVID-19, Thursday March 12th 2020 was the last opportunity our members had to skate together for OVER THREE MONTHS! Roller derby is more than a sport for the majority of our members so having this ripped away has been heart-wrenching.
To ease the pain for our South Sea family, members remained closely connected in the virtual world via regular live video & Zoom sessions. This included group exercise, belly-dancing, yoga and small-space skate sessions, rules quizzes, top-secret recipe demonstrations, ‘Nailed It’ inspired cooking competitions, plus crochet, knitting and other crafty meet-ups. Members also spent their time creating this amazing Pass the Helmet video to show everyone that we are definitely ready for derby!
It has been a long three months but recent news of restrictions easing has given us a light at the end of the tunnel. As it stands, we expect to return to training on Sunday June 28th 2020.
We are thrilled to be working with our venue Sk8house to stay healthy as we roll. We can’t wait to get to work on our fundamentals while maintaining important physical distancing with a Return to Rink plan in place that follows Australian Institute of Sport, Skate Victoria and WFTDA guidelines.
If the last few months have taught us anything, we will not take any of this for granted and community safety remains an absolute top priority.
